GOALKEEPERS | How to build highlights

When it comes to being a goalkeeper you have two main jobs. One of those jobs is preventing the ball from going in the back of the net and the other is adding a degree of leadership to the team. Making a save is great, but what if the opponent gets the rebound and gets another shot off? The ability to recover and position yourself to make the second save can elevate your status as a goalkeeper.

SAVES

Shot stopping is the most important thing that a coach will want to see. After the shot is taken it is up to the goalkeeper to determine the fate of the match. For this reason, we suggest placing saves at the beginning of your video. There are numerous types of saves that a goalkeeper can make and it is important to exhibit the many types in your highlight video.

Diving saves – A diving save shows that you are capable of saving a shot in the most impressive manner. Although you may not be in the perfect position, you are able to jump in a given direction and extend your body to its limits to prevent the ball from hitting the net.

Positional saves – A positional save shows that you are aware of where you are located in relation to the goal posts. It is important to cut off any angle that an attacker might have to slip the ball past you.

Penalty saves – When the odds are in favor of the kicker, this kind of save shows a mix of strong mentality and skill. Goalkeepers can implement mind games and can learn to read behaviors to come up big with a save.

1v1 Situations – A recruiter will want to see how aggressive a goalie is off the line. Can you come off your line and steal the ball off an opponent’s feet without a shot being attempted? Can you position yourself to prevent the opponent from having a clear shot on target?

INTERCEPTIONS

The next thing a coach will want to see is your ability to prevent the opposing team from having shots in the first place. This means that you are able to read the game and come out of your goal to make clearances, pick up the ball, or catch the ball from an incoming cross.

Clearances – Whenever a dangerous ball is played into the box it is crucial to clear it quickly and to a place where the opposing team can’t immediately do anything. There are many ways to make a clearance. Kicks and punches sound like fighting moves, but they are good techniques to clear the ball.

Catches – Catching a ball in the air shows that you have the mind to read the game and the body to make it happen. Making a catch is great because it gives your team a 100% chance of possessing the ball. Set pieces are a great way of showing this ability.

KICKS

Recruiters are definitely going to want to see your kicks. When it comes to goal kicks and punts it is important to show both distance and accuracy.

Goal kicks – Goal kicks are important to relieve the pressure from the previous attack. Being able to put the ball around half field gives your team a good chance of gaining possession in a better area.

Punts – Punts can be useful in a variety of ways. Again, they can relieve pressure but can also be used to create a counter-attack scenario.
