OUTSIDE BACK | How to build highlights

The outside back (also known as fullback) is a crucial position for both attacking and defending. This position requires you to be fast so you can keep up with speedy forwards and fit so you can join the attack and quickly get back on defense if needed.  More often than not, outside backs claim to be midfielders or wingers. This is why a  coach will really value a true outside back who is dedicated to this critical role.

DEFENDING

The main thing a coach will prioritize is your ability to make tackles. Being able to make tackles in the defensive third is expected, but making tackles in the offensive third to keep the attack alive can really set you apart. On defense, it is important that an outside back does not allow the opponent to make a cross or to cut inside.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER

Can you make a tackle in a 1v1 situation?

Can you head the ball away from a cross (cross, corner kick, free kick)?

Can you prevent a winger from getting past you?

Can you track back and make a tackle when an attacker has slipped through the defensive line?

Are you able to read the game and make interceptions?

How is your defensive positioning when the other team is attacking with numbers?

Are you more compact when the opposing team has possession?

Can you set an offside trap?

Can you stop a counter attack?

Can you shield the ball to earn a goal kick or a throw in?

ATTACKING

On offense, your coach will want to see you finding forwards whether it is with a through ball, pass to feet, or a cross to the head. Even better if you can dribble and beat defenders.

Do you have any goals?

Can you cross the ball into the box?

Can you send an attacker through on goal?

Can you challenge the keeper from outside the box?

Can you win a header off a free kick or a corner?

Can you beat defenders?

Can you get wide and be an option for your team?

PASSING AND BALL CONTROL

A coach should also want to see your ability to maintain possession while on the touchline. The outside back is the player that can really spread out the field to be an option for teammates.

Can you switch the field?

Can you settle a flighted ball?

Can you put pace on your passes?

Can you play out of the back?

Are you able to maintain possession in tight spaces?
